The Medicare Hospice Benefit was created in 1983 to help dying patients and to support their loved ones. It provides coverage for services and items needed to manage a patient's terminal illness and ensure maximum comfort. The hospice benefit includes four (4) different levels of care, including intense types of care in order to manage crisis situations. Medicare certified hospice organizations must be able to provide all four levels of care.
