The word "hospice" comes from the same Latin root as "hospitality," "host," and "guest." The modern hospice movement was founded on the idea that patients were honored guests in the care of loving hosts; and as guests, their comfort and wishes came first. Hospice care is designed to honor patient's choices and ensure relief from all the different aspects of suffering that can be a part of terminal illness.
