Hospice care originally started in this country with an all-volunteer workforce. Doctors, nurses, counselors, and others gathered to create a model of care that would provide a holistic approach to dying; a program that would be patient-centered and family-focused. Volunteers are still used today in hospice in many areas of administrative operations and in patient care. In many ways, volunteers have been the foundation of hospice care.
